The Tigers originally were Wheat’s 1st Special Battalion, consisting of “Wharf Rats” from the docks of New Orleans , but as the war progressed the other Louisiana regiments would be referred to as the Tigers . Many nationalities represented the ranks such as Germans , Italians and Irish as well as locals like Creoles and Cajuns. The Louisiana Tigers were feared by civilians as well as their confederate brethren from other states because of their reputation as hard drinkers and ruthless fighters. The athletic teams at L.S.U. are named after these soldiers and not the bengal tiger. The Louisiana Tigers were considered to be one of Lee’s Shock Troops.
